From an older Odoo version to a new one
Database, standard modules, extensions, interfaces, and processes are prepared and tested for the target version.
Odoo Upgrade · Version change · Instance migration
New version, different hosting, Community or Enterprise: We check the database, modules, interfaces, and business processes before the productive Odoo instance is carefully migrated.
Clearly separate terms
An existing Odoo database cannot be modernized solely by installing a new software version. Data model, standard modules, custom extensions, views, automations, and external interfaces must be considered together.
Depending on the starting situation, the goal is a technical version upgrade, a new instance with targeted data transfer, or a combination of both.
Four typical starting situations
The cases may overlap. A hosting change is often associated with a version upgrade or a cleanup of the installed modules.
Database, standard modules, extensions, interfaces, and processes are prepared and tested for the target version.
Functions, licensing model, modules, and technical dependencies determine whether a direct migration or a newly built target instance is sensible.
Database, file storage, add-ons, configuration, email, domains, jobs, and external services must be fully transferred to the new operating environment.
Master data, number ranges, companies, permissions, and histories require defined priority and mapping rules.
Before the first test run
A robust assessment begins with an inventory. This reveals technical blockers and business decisions before time flows into an unsuitable migration route.
Size, integrity, attachments, data growth, multi-company structure, and archived content.
Standard, Community, Enterprise, and custom add-ons along with dependencies and source code availability.
Custom fields, views, studio customizations, automations, server actions, reports, and email templates.
Shops, marketplaces, payment, shipping, accounting, email, and other external systems.
Hosting, operating system, database, proxy, domains, certificates, schedules, backups, and monitoring.
Controlled process
Every productive transition requires reproducible test runs, documented approvals, and a fallback plan. Direct experimentation on the live database is not a migration concept.
Capture version, edition, hosting, modules, data, interfaces, and customizations.
Firmly determine target version, edition, hosting, and future module scope.
Adapt custom modules, views, automations, and integrations for the target environment.
Migrate a copy of the productive database, log errors, and make the process repeatable.
Professionally approve critical processes, permissions, reports, email, and external data flows.
Define downtime, data freeze, backup, communication plan, responsible parties, and fallback path.
Control jobs, integrations, errors, data quality, and business-critical operations after the switch.
Decision instead of automation
The technically fastest route is not always the most economical. For heavily grown installations, a cleaned rebuild may be more sensible than fully adopting every historical customization.
| Starting position | Typical approach | Particular risk |
|---|---|---|
| Standard-compliant Odoo instance | Version upgrade with complete test migration | Changed standard behavior is overlooked in the functional test |
| Many individual modules | Upgrade plus porting and cleaning of custom code | Missing or unmaintainable source code blocks the target version |
| Historically grown database | Upgrade with data cleaning or selective rebuild | Legacy issues and unused customizations are adopted unchecked |
| Multiple instances | Consolidation project with its own mapping rules | Duplicates, number ranges, and company logic collide |
| Hosting change without version jump | Technical instance migration with operational and integration testing | File storage, jobs, mail or external endpoints are missing |
Acceptance
A migrated database can start without error messages and still produce incorrect results. Therefore, acceptance includes data, rights, documents, and complete business processes.
Compare samples, sums, relationships, attachments, number ranges, and multi-company logic.
Play through sales, purchasing, inventory, accounting, service, and other critical processes completely.
Controlled testing of connectors, jobs, webhooks, email, exports, and external systems.

Frequently asked questions
An upgrade raises an existing installation to a newer version. Migration is the broader term and can also include hosting, edition, or instance changes as well as selective data transfer.
Only if the source code and dependencies are available and the modules are checked and adjusted for the target version if necessary. Unneeded extensions should be consciously removed rather than automatically ported.
This depends not only on the database size. The scope and quality of individual modules, interfaces, customization, test cases, and necessary process changes significantly determine the effort.
Test migrations run on copies. For the final cutover, a defined maintenance window is usually required, the length of which depends on the migration run, delta strategy, and acceptance.
Yes. If an installation has many outdated customizations, poor data quality, or significantly changed target processes, a cleaned target instance with selective data transfer can be more economical and maintainable.
