The short answer
JTL thinks from the perspective of online retail. Odoo thinks from the perspective of the entire company.
Six decision criteria
The robust comparison starts with your processes
Business model
Is your company primarily a trading business – or do trade, services, projects, manufacturing, and financial processes need to be managed together?
Sales channels
Which shops and marketplaces are business-critical, what data flows in both directions, and which special processes need to be maintained?
Accounting and controlling
Should accounting, payment reconciliation, and evaluations be in the same system or remain connected via specialized solutions and exports?
Adaptability
Is a proven standard process sufficient, or does your company need its own data models, approvals, automations, and roles?
Operation and Responsibility
Who is responsible for hosting, updates, extensions, testing, and support? The technical operational form is part of the system decision.
Total Costs
Compare licenses, hosting, connectors, implementation, data migration, training, and ongoing maintenance over several years.

JTL-Wawi and Odoo in direct comparison
| Criterion | JTL-Wawi | Odoo |
|---|---|---|
| Starting Point | Inventory management and e-commerce processes | Modular business platform |
| Typical Strength | Online trade, order processing, inventory, shipping, and connected sales channels | End-to-end processes across sales, purchasing, inventory, finance, service, and other areas |
| Extension | JTL products, modules, interfaces, and partner solutions | Odoo apps, configuration, studio, partner and custom development – depending on edition and hosting |
| Operation | The JTL-Wawi system environment and database requirements must match the user and data volume | For custom connector modules: Odoo.sh or on-premise. Odoo Online does not support non-standard modules. |
| Decisive Question | Does the trade-oriented ecosystem sufficiently cover your other business processes? | Does the broader platform justify the higher implementation and governance needs? |

Cost comparison 2026
Three models – and no fair comparison without switching costs
| Cost level | JTL | Odoo Enterprise Custom | Odoo Community |
|---|---|---|---|
| License and tariff | JTL starts at €0 per month. Advanced costs according to JTL from €99 with annual payment or €119 with monthly payment, Pro from €329 or €369 per month. Enterprise is offered individually. Order volume and additional products may incur further costs. | For connector-capable enterprise projects, the Custom tariff is decisive. With annual billing, it costs according to the official Odoo pricing page for the initially ordered users in the first twelve months €29.90 per user per month, then €37.40. All apps, Odoo Studio, multiple companies, and the external API are included. | The open-source edition does not incur an Odoo Enterprise license fee. However, this does not mean that implementation and operation are free. |
| Hosting and operation | Depending on the setup, costs may arise for servers or hosting, database operation, backups, administration, and updates. | For custom or non-standard connector modules, Odoo.sh or on-premise options are available. According to Odoo documentation, Odoo documentation does not support such modules and is therefore not the suitable operating form for typical 4EGrowth connector projects. Odoo.sh hosting or own infrastructure will be calculated separately. | Hosting, backups, security, updates, and technical responsibility lie with the company or a service provider. |
| Implementation and integration | A new JTL implementation and external connections also incur project effort. However, those who already use JTL productively and continue to do so avoid the costs of a system change. | Process design, setup, data migration, training, connectors, and customizations are not automatically included in the user price. | The project effort fundamentally remains. Missing enterprise functions can generate additional operational, development, or integration effort. |
| When is it economically viable? | When the trade-oriented functionality fits and additional systems or manual handovers remain manageable. | When the broader platform brings together multiple business areas and the integration benefits exceed licensing and implementation costs. | If the required functionality is clearly defined, in-house technical know-how is available, and the saved licensing costs are not consumed by operation and custom development. |
Why the topic is particularly relevant now: JTL has introduced a new pricing and package structure for existing and new customers as of April 1, 2026. This is not evidence that JTL will necessarily become "always more expensive" – but a concrete reason to recalculate edition, order volume, additional products, and total costs and to explore alternatives openly.
Price status: September 23, 2026. Sources: JTL prices and rates, JTL FAQ on pricing and package structure from April 2026, Odoo prices and Odoo edition comparison. Prices and performance limits may change; the individual offer counts for a decision.
When Odoo gets closer
A switch is not worthwhile because of individual functions, but because of structural limits
Many ancillary systems
CRM, purchasing, service, projects, or financial processes are maintained outside of inventory management and must be constantly coordinated.
Too many media breaks
Data is exported, manually supplemented, and re-imported. Responsibilities and causes of errors are difficult to trace.
Own process logic
Approvals, roles, data models, or automations can only be represented in the existing structure with many detours.
New business models
In addition to trade, services, subscriptions, projects, repairs, or manufacturing are gaining importance.
No sufficient reason to switch: A more modern interface, a single missing report, or the hope that a new ERP will automatically resolve unclear processes.
The actual work
Migrating from JTL to Odoo: first processes, then data
A migration is more than just a master data import. Before going live, at least products and variants, customers, prices, open orders, inventories, documents, payments, returns, and the connected sales and shipping processes must be evaluated.
- Define target processes and system boundaries
- Check data inventory and data quality
- Define mapping and migration scope
- Test connectors and special cases
- Accept with realistic end-to-end cases
- Prepare cut-off date, parallel operation, and fallback plan
Historical data does not need to be fully transferred automatically. Often, a combination of cleanly migrated operational data and a comprehensible archive is more economical.
Frequently asked questions
JTL or Odoo – answered concisely
Is Odoo fundamentally better than JTL?
No. The systems pursue different focuses. Odoo is designed as a broader enterprise platform; JTL is closely aligned with e-commerce and inventory management. The better system is the one that represents the relevant overall process with reasonable effort.
Is Odoo Community really free?
The Community Edition is open source and does not incur an enterprise license fee. Hosting, implementation, data migration, updates, security, support, and any missing features or extensions still need to be calculated. It is particularly economical when the required functionality fits and technical responsibility is consciously taken on.
Is the switch worth it just because of the new JTL prices?
Generally not. An existing JTL customer avoids the costs and risks of migration by staying. A switch becomes economically interesting when Odoo additionally replaces other systems, interfaces, or manual processes, and this benefit exceeds the one-time switching costs over several years.
Can JTL be connected to Odoo?
Technically, an integration can be designed. Whether it is more sensible than a migration depends on data sovereignty, required data flows, frequency of changes, and the long-term system strategy.
Which data should be transferred during a switch?
That depends on the go-live concept. Operationally important data typically includes master data, current inventories, open transactions, and required booking information. For histories, a conscious decision should be made between migration and archiving.
Next step
Keep JTL, connect it, or switch to Odoo?
We consider your sales channels, data flows, and business processes and develop a robust system and migration decision from that.
